On-Board PA for Buses
Communicate information to bus passengers.
Companies that provide public transportation know how important it is to communicate information to their passengers on-board a bus or other vehicle. These messages may provide important emergency announcements (fire, bomb threats or evacuation details), next stop announcements, bus arrival and departure information (bus delays, and the station the bus is approaching), or courtesy announcements (“Watch your step”). The audio system may even interface with visual display signs on-board the vehicle to visually display the same message and aid hearing-impaired passengers. On-board public address announcements keep passengers informed about a variety of information, reducing their frustration and possibly even saving their lives in an emergency.
How do on-board announcements work?
On-board announcements are pre-recorded and loaded into a device that physically resides on the bus. This system interfaces into the bus’ public address system to play a variety of audio announcements. Messages can be activated manually by the bus driver, or automatically from wayside transponders, wheel count triggers, GPS, radio control or other mechanisms. When an audio message is played it may also trigger a visual message to be displayed on the sign boards in the bus.
On-board announcements provide information on:
1. Emergency Announcements:
Deliver pre-recorded emergency messages such as “Smoke has been detected in the bus, proceed to the exit” or “Please evacuate the bus quickly”.
2. Arrival and Departure Announcements:
Provide general on-board arrival and departure announcements to tell passengers which station or stop they are leaving or approaching and reinforce they are on the right bus, such as, “This is a Northbound bus, the next stop is Park Avenue”.
3. Courtesy Announcements:
Provide passengers with on-board courtesy announcements such as, “Smoking is not allowed on this bus” or “Watch your step while exiting the bus.”
4. Visual Messages:
When on-board public address announcements are played the same message may be displayed on a visual sign board on the bus. This reinforces the audio message just played and aids hearing-impaired passengers.
