PA Announcements On-Board Ships

Communicate information to ship passengers.

Companies that provide public transportation know how important it is to communicate information to their passengers on-board a ship or other vessel. These messages may provide important emergency announcements (fire, bomb threats or evacuation details), ship arrival and departure information (delays, and the port the ship is approaching), or courtesy announcements (“Watch your step when you disembark”). The audio system may also interface with visual display signs on-board the vessel to visually display the same message and aid hearing-impaired passengers. On-board public address announcements keep passengers informed about a variety of information, reducing their frustration and possibly even saving their lives in an emergency.

How do on-board announcements work?

On-board announcements are pre-recorded and loaded into one or more devices that physically reside on the ship. The on-board system interfaces into the ships’ public address system to play a variety of audio announcements, and depending upon the size of the vessel a single unit may be installed or more complex system that uses a touch-screen to control messages. Announcements can be set to automatically play at certain times of the day, or to play only in certain zones on the ship. The Captain or other staff member can activate messages manually, by using a touch-screen (if available) or triggered by radio control, GPS or other mechanisms. Any audio announcement may also trigger a message to be displayed on visual sign boards located in various locations on-board the ship for the hearing-impaired that can not hear the audio announcements. The announcement systems could also interface with other information systems on-land to ensure the information played to the public is as up-to-date as possible.

Provide information for:

1. Emergency Announcements:

Deliver pre-recorded emergency messages such as “Smoke has been detected in the ship, proceed to the nearest exit” or “Please evacuate the ship, proceed to lifeboats”.

2. Arrival and Departure Announcements:

Provide general on-board arrival and departure announcements to tell passengers which port they are leaving or approaching and reinforce they are on the right ship,  such as, “Thank you for taking the Scotland Ferry, our destination is the port of Oban.”

3. Courtesy Announcements:

Provide passengers with on-board courtesy announcements such as, “Smoking is not allowed on this ship” or “Watch your step while exiting the vessel.”

4. Visual Messages:

When on-board public address announcements are played the message may be displayed on visual sign boards on the ship. This reinforces the audio message just played and aids hearing-impaired passengers.
