Passenger and Timetable
Accurate, real time passenger information.
To provide travelers with accurate real time passenger information, companies need to know if that bus, train or ferry is on-time. Companies can use GPS and inertial navigation position detection techniques, a wireless box on the vehicle, track sensors, or a mass train detector, to determine where each vehicle is located at a specific time, and therefore if it will be on-time when it arrives at the next stop. At regular intervals, this information is updated into a timetable schedule and downloaded into intelligent sign units (ISU) located at the bus stops or platforms/stations. These sign units visually and audibly (for the visually impaired) display the updated schedule information for that stop, so passengers know if their bus/train/ferry is on-time. In a large station or platform this information may also be fed into another computer triggering a public address announcement that informs passengers when there is a delay.
Travelers need accurate real-time information:
1. Visual Passenger Information:
Passengers always get the most up-to-date information displayed on the sign boards at the bus stops or platforms. This means they can rely on the information when making their plans.
2. Audio Passenger Information:
To supplement the visual display signs and help passengers that are visually impaired many stops and stations now play audio messages or public address announcements that reflect the current data displayed on the signs.
3. Remote Passenger Information:
Some companies allows passengers to use the phone, internet SMS or WAP systems to obtain real-time passenger information without physically having to go to the bus stop or train station.
4. Notification of Schedule disruptions:
Real time passenger information enables companies to notify passengers if there is a change in the arrival or departure schedule such as buses/ trains arriving earlier or later than expected.
5. Notification of Facility Disruptions:
Bus and train companies need to be able to notify passengers if there is a disruption at their facility such as elevators or escalators that are not functioning, or when platforms are closed for servicing.
6. Emergency Alerts:
If there is an emergency at the location and passengers need to evacuate the area then pre-programmed or live messages can be played to notify passengers of the situation.
